Five Podcast Stations for Those "Slow and Steady" Workouts

It might just be me, but I love talk radio. Specifically, I love Kidd Kraddick in the Morning. I figured it would air in Houston because it's based out of Fort Worth, but I was wrong. So sad. Fortunately, they have an app to which they post the daily show without commercials.  Whoops ...I'm getting slightly off topic.

When I'm doing a "slow and steady" kind of workout, I love listening to podcasts. I enjoy the casual tone and I feel like I'm a part of the conversation :) What's a "slow and steady" workout? Whenever I just want to get outside and move but not stress my body, I'll go for a long walk (1-2 hours), a long very slow run, or a long bike ride.

Here are 5 stations I listen to regularly:

JILLIAN MICHAELS

The Jillian Michaels Show

I've already written two blogs referencing Jillian Michaels, so naturally I'm going to keep gushing. If you're not a Jillian fan, try listening to her podcasts. She's a very different person from her Biggest Loser crazy trainer character. She's warm, friendly, sympathetic, and has great practical diet and exercise advice.

THE PALEO VIEW

The Paleo View

This podcast features two bloggers, Paleo Mom and Paleo Parents. These two women are inspiring. They both suffered from obesity and eating disorders, and they used food as medicine to overcome enormous struggles. They discuss strategies to cope with various disordered eating behaviors on occasion, but they also talk about delicious paleo foods and current topics.

PRIMAL BLUEPRINT

The Primal Blueprint Podcast

This podcast comes from Mark Sisson's website Mark's Daily Apple. I use this website to get most of my paleo/primal information. Mark Sisson writes articles on just about any topic you can think of. His podcasts include listener questions and discussions of commonly talked about issues like exercise and dietary choices.

ART OF MANLINESS

The Art of Manliness

This is an incredibly entertaining podcast I came across while using StumbleUpon. They talk about "bringing back manliness" in their posts...it's not as sexist as it sounds, I promise. They advocate skills that many twenty-somethings (both male and female) these days lack, and they range from dressing more sharply to building an incredible campfire. In one of their podcasts, they interviewed Survivorman (from the Discovery show) Les Stroud. It was interesting learning about the show from the "star's" perspective!

FREAKONOMICS

Freakonomics Radio

This is an entertaining podcast show that talks about current economically-based topics in a conversational manner. A friend recommended the podcast to me after we had a conversation about tipping appropriately at restaurants. Freakonomics has a great conversation about the pros and cons of tipping. Some other topics I've downloaded and am eager to listen to: Fitness Apartheid, Who Runs the Internet, A Better Way to Eat, and Failure is Your Friend.

Question to Readers: Do you have a podcast you love? I love them, so I'm open to any suggestions for new shows!

Good night!

  1. I'm obsessed with podcasts! You've listed some really good ones--I'll have to check out the art of manliness haha. My all-time favorite is the TED radio hour podcast. Some of them are incredibly though-provoking and good (like the success, identity, and happiness topics)
